NHS and private services

Most of what we do doesn't need an appointment. If you're not sure whether something applies to you, just call or come in and ask.

NHS Pharmacy First

Pharmacy First lets our pharmacists assess and, where clinically appropriate, treat seven common conditions without you needing to see a GP first. It's an NHS service, so there's no charge for the consultation — normal prescription charges apply if you're supplied a medicine and aren't exempt.

The seven conditions

  • Earache — in children and young people aged 1 to 17
  • Impetigo — from age 1 upwards
  • Infected insect bites — from age 1 upwards
  • Shingles — adults aged 18 and over
  • Sinusitis — from age 12 upwards
  • Sore throat — from age 5 upwards
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections — women aged 16 to 64

What happens

You'll have a private consultation with the pharmacist, who will ask about your symptoms and check whether you meet the NHS criteria for the service. If treatment is appropriate, we can supply it there and then. If it isn't — or if we spot something that needs a GP or urgent care — we'll tell you and help you get to the right place.

Walk in and ask, or call us first to check the pharmacist is free.

Eligibility for Pharmacy First is set by the NHS and includes age ranges and clinical criteria. Not everyone who asks will be eligible, and treatment isn't guaranteed.

Prescriptions

Repeat prescriptions

Nominate Ward End Pharmacy as your pharmacy and your prescriptions come to us electronically from your GP through the NHS Electronic Prescription Service. No paper to collect, nothing to lose.

To order your repeats, the free NHS App is the simplest and safest option — it works with any GP surgery in England. If you'd rather not use an app, speak to us and we'll talk you through the alternatives.

Prescription delivery

We deliver prescriptions locally. Ask us about our delivery area and how to arrange it.

New Medicine Service

If you've just been started on a medicine for certain long-term conditions, the NHS New Medicine Service gives you extra support from your pharmacist over the first few weeks — checking how you're getting on, and sorting out any problems early.

Inhaler technique

A surprising number of people don't get the full dose from their inhaler. Bring yours in and we'll check your technique.

Other NHS services

Blood pressure checks

Free NHS blood pressure checks for eligible adults. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms at all, which is exactly why it's worth checking. If your reading is high, we'll arrange follow-up and make sure your GP knows.

Flu vaccination

Seasonal flu vaccination — free on the NHS if you're in an eligible group, and available privately if you're not. Available in season; call to check availability.

NHS contraception service

Our pharmacists can start you on oral contraception, or supply your ongoing repeats, following a private consultation — without needing a GP appointment.

Travel Clinic

A travel health consultation covers where you're going, how long for, what you'll be doing while you're there, and your medical history — and from that we'll advise on the vaccinations and precautions you need.

What we cover

  • Travel health consultations and risk assessment
  • Travel vaccinations
  • Hajj and Umrah travel health, including Meningitis ACWY
  • Malaria prevention advice
  • Family and group travel

When to come

Ideally six to eight weeks before you travel, since some vaccines need more than one dose or take time to work. Leaving sooner than that? Call us anyway — we can often still help.

Travel services are private and charged. Prices depend on which vaccinations you need, so call us on 0121 328 7680 and we'll talk it through.

Private services

Weight management

Our pharmacist-led weight management service includes a health assessment, an eligibility review, lifestyle advice and ongoing monitoring, with treatment options discussed where clinically appropriate.

This is a consultation-based service. Suitability is assessed individually, and treatment is not guaranteed. To find out whether it's right for you, speak to our pharmacist.

Meningitis ACWY

Meningitis ACWY vaccination, required for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims and recommended for some other travellers and students.

Emergency contraception

Confidential emergency contraception following a private consultation with the pharmacist. Emergency contraception works best the sooner it's taken, so don't wait — call or come in.

Chlamydia screening

Confidential chlamydia screening, with treatment where appropriate. No judgement, no fuss.

Private flu vaccination

If you're not eligible for a free NHS flu jab, you can have one privately. Available in season.
